Claiming the "Unclaimed": How to Take Control of Your Business Identity

Did Google create a listing for you without your permission? Learn how to claim your "Ghost Profile" and protect your brand from hijackers.

The "Ghost" in the Machine

"I never created a Google Business Profile, so why is my business showing up on Google Maps with the wrong phone number?"

This is a common shock for new business owners. Google’s goal is to map the entire world. To do this, they use "Bots" that crawl public records, news articles, and local directories. If these bots find enough evidence that a business exists, they will automatically create a listing for it.

These are called "Unclaimed Profiles." And if you don't claim yours, you are leaving your business identity wide open for anyone to exploit.

In this guide, we’re going to show you how to find, claim, and secure your unclaimed business profile.

The Danger of Unclaimed Profiles

An unclaimed profile is a "Digital Wild West." 1. Misinformation: The phone number might be an old one from five years ago. 2. Competitor Hijacking: A competitor can click "Own this business?" and verify it themselves. They can then change the website link to *their* site or route the calls to *their* team. 3. Bad Reviews: Customers can leave one-star reviews on an unclaimed profile, and because you don't "own" it, you can't respond to them or defend your reputation. 4. Zero Ranking Power: Unclaimed profiles almost never rank in the top 3. You are invisible while your data is being used by others.

How to Find Your Unclaimed Listing

Go to Google Maps and search for your business name.

  • If you see a listing that says "Own this business?" or "Claim this business," it is unclaimed.
  • Pro Tip: Also search for your business phone number. Sometimes Google creates a listing with a slight misspelling of your name that you wouldn't find in a standard search.

  • The Claiming Process: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Click "Own this business?"

Google will take you to a login screen. Use a professional Google account (ideally one that uses your business domain email).

Step 2: Choose Your Verification Method

Because the listing already exists, Google may offer "Instant Verification" if you are already using Google Search Console for your website. If not, you will likely need to go through the Video or Postcard process.

    Step 3: The "Cleanup" Phase

Once you have control, do not just leave the old data.
  • Update the hours.
  • Upload fresh photos.
  • The Most Important Step: Change the phone number and website URL to the correct ones immediately.

What if Someone Else Already Claimed It?

If you try to claim your business and Google says "This listing has already been claimed by [a*@gmail.com]," you have been Hijacked**.

Don't Panic. 1. Click "Request Access." 2. Google will send an email to the current "owner." 3. If they don't respond within 3 days, Google will give you the option to prove ownership and "Over-ride" their claim. 4. If they *reject* your request, you must file a "Ownership Dispute" with Google support.
